Rationale: The Athletic Training Staff currently consists of two full-time Certified Athletic Trainers and two part-time Certified Athletic Trainers. In addition, approximately 45 athletic training students gain knowledge through clinical experience in the athletic training room on a daily basis. Our students and staff strive to provide high quality of care and we provide a number of services to our student-athletes. We are, however, unable to meet all the needs of intramural participants, members of the Central College fitness center, and individuals on campus as spectators. As such, the Athletic Training Staff seeks to outline a policy to clarify services we will provide and when these services can be provided.

Guideline 1 – All Central College student-athletes will receive care. A student-athlete is defined as someone who is on a current roster for a Central College collegiate sport. The student-athlete must also have a current physical, insurance card, emergency contact information, and HIPAA form on file to receive care.

Guideline 2 – Preference will always be given to in-season student-athletes. An in-season student-athlete is defined as an athlete participating within his/her sport’s traditional NCAA season. An out-of-season student-athlete is defined as any athlete not participating in the traditional NCAA season. This includes out-of-season strength and conditioning sessions.

Guideline 3 – Out-of-season student-athletes can obtain care from Central College Athletic Trainers by setting up an appointment with a certified member of the staff (not with athletic training students) or reporting to the Athletic Training Room between the hours of 4:00-5:30pm, Monday through Friday. If further care/treatment is deemed necessary, a schedule will be set up between an Athletic Training Staff member and the student-athlete. Taping will not be provided for student-lead practices or participation in intramural sports.

Guideline 4 – When possible, first aid will be provided to anyone injured in the Kuyper Complex. This will consist of first aid, CPR, and AED use only. This may include administering ice, controlling bleeding, referral to a physician or the ER, and/or activation of EMS.

Guideline 5 – No continual treatment beyond first aid will be provided to any individual unless the person is a student-athlete. Taping, bracing, special padding, and modality treatments such as hot/cold whirlpools, muscle stimulation, ultrasound, and LASER will not be provided to the general population.

Guideline 6 – Athletic Training Room hours of operation will vary depending on the sport season. If a Certified Athletic Trainer is not present, and an emergency arises, dial 911 (9-911 from a campus phone) to activate emergency services. If you need extended care and it is not an emergency, make an appointment with Pella Regional Health Center (641-621-2200).

NOTE: This document will be published in the student handbook, posted outside the athletic training room and addressed during pre-season and post season meetings conducted by athletic department administrators.
