Normal office hours are Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Summer hours usually begin the Monday following commencement and the ending date is announced based on the fall academic start-up. The summer hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It is expected these hours will be maintained, except those days formally designated as college holidays.
The hours of work in particular departments or for particular employees are established by the college administration and/or the supervisor based on the requirements of the job. For non-exempt employees, overtime may be required under certain circumstances. Every effort will be made to give the employee as much advance notice as possible.
The normal lunch period is one (1) hour and a lunch break is encouraged. Administrative offices are to be kept open during lunch periods when the college is in session. The normal lunch period during the reduced summer office schedule is 30 minutes, however employees may arrange different lunch periods if approved by an immediate supervisor. Designated offices do need to be staffed during this reduced schedule. An 8-hour work day is retained throughout the year. If a lunch break for a non-exempt employee is unpaid, the employee must be free of work responsibilities during the break; and non-exempt employees who violate or supervisors who allow the violation of, this rule may be subject to disciplinary action up to and including discharge.
It is important to have recognized hours of operation and have the offices available to handle routine matters as they come from both internal and external sources. Any deviation from these hours must be approved by the divisional vice president.
Break Periods: A 12-minute paid break (5% of normal day) is allowed both morning and afternoon. In all instances each work area should be covered and a nominal staff should remain on duty. Employees who choose to remain at work during breaks are not entitled to leave before the normal quitting time and will not receive extra pay for the time worked. It should be recognized that the allowed 12-minute break period is not sufficient time for any off-campus activity.
